"A night at the races .." - On a glorious, hot July evening over a hundred people gathered at the Consul General's Residence on the banks of the Rhine to enjoy an Ascot style evening to raise funds for the BWC charities. The lovely gardens of the Residence provided a perfect setting for the elegantly clad ladies and their partners, some equally elegantly dressed, to enjoy a glass of Pimms or two and some delicious canapés before the racing began in earnest. A selection of thoroughbreds lined up for the three main feature races and a frenzy of activity kept the bookies busy ! Although no course records were broken on this occasion the competition was intense as the roll of a dice determined who was going where and when! A most ingenious grid having been set up on the lawn, complete with water feature and hurdle. The spectators clapped and cheered their horses along the way and towards the end of the evening, an auction of these superb equines took place, raising even more money for the charities. Perhaps one of the most onerous tasks of the evening was choosing the winner of the most stunning hat .... made all the more difficult by there being so many to choose from. Sadly the evening was over all too soon, our thanks go to everyone involved in making the event such a success, especially Jenny Collier and Boyd McCleary. About 2,500 euros was raised and will benefit the BWC charities Knackpunkt and MIND, and a lot of fun was had by all |
