A Cricket Day to Remember by Pat H.

It was the kind of scorching summer day that called for wide-brimmed hats, generous sunscreen, and plenty of laughter.  Regardless of the heat 14 ladies from the club ventured out to the ‘English field’ at the Nord Park in Düsseldorf to support the friendly cricket match between The British Business Club Düsseldorf and Christ Church.  Armed with drinks, blankets, folding chairs, stools and good cheer, we made our way to where there was a huge type of bush so we could spread ourselves out around its shade.  We were there not so much for the game… (I think it’s only Sheena who knows how the game is actually played), but for the company, the sunshine, and the treats.

Both teams laid out a spread that could tempt even the most focused fielder: dainty delicious sandwiches, golden scones to be topped with jam and clotted cream (naturally provided by Joyce’s own fair hand) and lots of Pimm’s complete with ice, cucumber and a sprig of fresh mint… because hydration is important!

The cricket, to be fair, did happen… we heard lots of clapping and cheering in the background and occasionally, someone looked up and asked, “Who’s winning?” — which was usually followed by a shrug and a sip of Pimm’s.

When the sun’s shining, the drinks are flowing, and the scones are just right, cricket is less about the competition (in our eyes!), and more about the joy of a quintessentially English Summer’s day.
